Before forming Toto the members of the group did session work for Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts,[4Seals and Crofts,[4] Boz Scaggs and Sonny and Cher. The guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's lead singer.
About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word meaning "all encompassing," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes Toto a household name across the globe.
After a gap of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to record a new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that the original members of Toto were on stage together. The band broke up following this. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all of the original Toto members were performing together for over 31 years. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over, but the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a string of disappointing releases prompted Toto to call it quits for a few years. But, the group recommenced touring in 2012 with the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album marked a return to their best form, and the tour that came with it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
